2011, US Open, IPC, USA. Camilo Bautista scores winning goal in final second win over Crab Orchard

By Alex Webbe

Over 2,000 polo fans were on hand as Las Monjitas lined up to play Adolfo Cambiaso and the powerful Crab Orchard team on Field number five in the quarterfinals of the 2011 US Open Championships at the International Polo Club in Wellington.

So anticipated was this matchup that virtually all of the fieldside parking places were reserved by abandoned cars hours before the game began as one after another would drop off a car before driving back to the Isla Carroll West Field for the earlier quarterfinal between Lechuza and Bendabout.

Crab Orchard started out slowly even cautiously while Las Monjitas played like they had nothing to lose. Las Monjitas put up the first two goals on a goal from the field from Agustin Merlos followed by a penalty conversion from the Argentine 9-goaler. Adolfo Cambiaso answered for Crab Orchard with a single goal from the field and the chukker ended with Las Monjitas guarding a one goal, 2-1 lead.

Cambiaso tied it up in the second , but Santiago Toccalino kept Las Monjitas in the lead with his first goal of the game, and Las Monjitas took a 3-2 lead into the third period.

A disjointed Crab Orchard offense was held scoreless for the next seven minutes while Las Monjitas got goals from Merlos and Eduardo Astrada. The first half ended with Las Monjitas leading 5-2.

The Las Monjitas strategy seemed to be to double Adolfo Cambiaso down the field and try to force him to make a play, and for the first half it appeared to be working.

Las Monjitas got two penalty goals in the fourth chukker from Merlos while Crab Orchard settled for a single goal from Hilario Ulloa. The Las Monjitas lead was extended to four goals, 7-3, as the period ended

Crab Orchard staged a fifth chukker rally, converting two penalty goals (one from Nachi du Plessis and another from Ulloa). For the first time all afternoon, Crab Orchard outscored Las Monjitas, and cut the lead to a single goal, 7-6.

Hard riding was the rule in the final chukker, with Crab Orchard finally knotting it up at 7-7 on a penalty conversion by Ulloa, following a technical on Astrada. A hard bump put Cambiaso on the ground for nearly four minutes, but he remounted and the game played on. With seconds on the clock a Las Monjitas rush towards the Crab Orchard goal had team captain Camilo Bautista scoring the winning goal in the 8-7 contest.

The victory moves Las Monjitas into next week’s semifinals while Crab Orchard reflects on a disappointing season that saw them watching the finals of all three legs of the Triple Crown from the sidelines.

Adolfo Cambiaso & Lolo Castagnola

By Alex Webbe

Facundo Pieres opened the match with a penalty goal, and Sebastian Merlos followed up with a goal from the field for an early 2-0 lead, but few present believed that the Lechuza team that had been averaging 11 goals per game would be held scoreless for the entire first half of play.

Second chukker goals from Mariano Uranga and Carlitos Gracida had Zacara up 4-0, and still no effective offense from Lechuza. Gracida scored the only goal of the third chukker as Crab Orchard left the field at the end of the first half with a 5-0 lead.

Lechuza showed a little life in the fourth with Gaston Lisioli (substituting for Martin Espain) and 10-goaler Juan Martin Nero (60-yard penalty conversion) each scoring while holding Zacara scoreless for the first time all afternoon.

Lechuza cut further into the Zacara lead in the fifth, getting a pair of goals from Sapo Caset. Zacara responded with a single goal from Gracida for a 6-4 edge.

Facundo Pieres made it 7-4 with an early sixth chukker goal, but Lechuza continued to press the Zacara defense. Caset’s third goal of the game cut the Zacara lead to two goals, 7-5, with time running down on the clock. With just over a minute left in regulation time, Lisioli drove the ball through the Zacara goal posts, cutting the lead to a single goal, 7-6, but time expired before the ball could be bowled in.

The victory lifts the Zacara record to 1-2, not impressive by any means, but enough to make it into the tournament quarterfinals. Lechuza had already qualified for the quarterfinals on the strength of two earlier wins, and ends preliminary play with a respectable 2-1 record.

“We were in control of the game from the beginning,” offered Zacara’s 10-goaler, Facundo Pieres when asked about the low-scoring affair, and we didn’t want to press the horses. We did what we needed to do today.”

Pieres scored only twice in the win, and had been averaging eight goals a game coming in to the contest. Lechuza’s Sapo Caset scored three times after averaging seven goals a game in their two earlier matches.

The Zacara victory pairs Zacara (1-2) against Audi (3-0) at noon on Sunday, April 10 while Lechuza (2-1) will face Bendabout (3-0) on Saturday, April 9 at 3pm.

CRAB ORCHARD 16, PIAGET 9

Crab Orchard made a case for being the 2011 US Open favorite as they took apart Piaget 16-9 in the noon contest.

Hilario Ulloa lit up the scoreboard with four first chukker goals as Crab Orchard raced out to an early 5-1 lead. Nachi du Plessis added the fifth Crab Orchard goal of the chukker with Nachi Heguy converting a penalty shot for Piaget’s only score.

Crab orchard added three more goals in the second frame, getting a pair of goals from Adolfo Cambiaso and another goal from Ulloa. Piaget responded with penalty conversions from Heguy and Lolo Castagnola, but at the end of the second chukker Crab orchard led 8-3.

Two goals from Castagnola cut the Crab orchard lead to three goals, 8-5 when Ulloa notched his sixth goal of the game for a 9-5 halftime lead.

Cambiaso showed the onlookers why he is considered one of the greatest players to play the game as he demonstrated masterful stickwork and accomplished horsemanship in the second half. He reeled off three more goals to run the Crab orchard total to 12 goals while Heguy’s third goal of the game had Piaget trailing 12-6 after four chukkers of play.

Two more penalty goals from Heguy in the fifth kept faint hopes alive for a rally, but the optimism was short-lived. Goals from Cambiaso and Ulloa closed out the fifth chukker with Crab Orchard holding on to a comfortable 14-8 lead.

Cambiaso scored his seventh goal of the game in the sixth while Ulloa tallied his eights. Heguy answered with a goal from the field for the final score of the game in the 16-9 Crab orchard win.

The victory boosts the Crab orchard record to 3-0 and will put them in a quarterfinal game against Las Monjitas (1-2) on Saturday at 5pm.

BENDABOUT 11, PONY EXPRESS 9

Julio Arellano in action

In what amounted to little more than a practice game in the morning competition, Bendabout remained unbeaten in 2011 US Open play, as it captured an 11-9 game from Pony Express despite the heroic actions of its team captain, Bob Daniels.

It was less than four weeks ago when Daniels was part of a three horse collision that sent him to the hospital with broken ribs and a fractured scapula. Saturday morning, against all odds, Daniels not only returned to the field to play in a US Open contest, but scored five goals to boot.

Daniels opened the scoring in the first chukker with a goal and added another to end the chukker. Pony Express teammate Juan Garcia Grossi scored a goal as well with Bendabout‘s Gillian Johnston scoring to keep her team from being shutout. Pony Express left the field at the end of the first chukker with Daniels in the saddle and holding a 3-1 lead.

Gillian Johnston and Magoo Laprida scored single goals for Bendabout in the second period, but two more goals from Daniels kept Pony Express ahead 5-3 as the chukker ended.

A penalty conversion from Bendabout’s Julio Arellano and a goal Johnston’s third goal of the day had it all even at 5-5 in the third, but the offense was just getting started. A goal from Pony Express 9-goaler, Bautista Heguy, gave Pony Express a 6-5 lead, but the lead was only temporary. Goals from Laprida and Johnston had Bendabout in front 7-6 until Maureen Brennan (substituting for Daniels in the third) tied it up with her only goal of the day. After three chukkers of play, the score was knotted up at 7-7.

Both teams’ defenses tightened up in the fourth, with Bendabout’s Sugar Erskine accounting for the only goal of the period. Bendabout took an 8-7 lead with two chukkers left to play.

Arellano converted another penalty shot for a goal from Bendabout, 9-7, but Daniels, back on the field after a third chukker respite, Daniels scored his fifth goal of the match, cutting the Bendabout lead to a single goal, 9-8, when Laprida responded. Picking up his third goal of the morning match, Laprida put Bendabout up, 10-8. Santiago Chavanne closed out the scoring in the fifth chukker for Pony Express for his first score of the game, and the period ended with Bendabout holding on to a narrow 10-9 lead.

Both teams stepped up their games in the final chukker of play, but it would be Johnston’s fifth goal of the match that would put Bendabout ahead by two goals, 11-9, as time expired.

The win boosted the Bendabout record to 3-0 while Pony Express falls to 0-3.
