By Alex Webbe/ Second round play in the 2012 Ylvisaker Cup at the International Polo Club in Wellington got underway Sunday afternoon with Valiente I running its record to 2-0 with overtime win at the expense of Orchard Hill (1-1) while MetalTek (1-1) finally got into the winning column with a 16-8 victory over Pony Express (0-2).

In an opening chukker that saw six penalties whistled, Valiente I fought Orchard Hill to a 2-2 tie with Santiago Toccalino converting a pair of 60-yard penalty shots for goals in the opening chukker.  Orchard Hill responded with a goal from the field from Pablo Spinacci and Facundo Obregon (penalty conversion).

Orchard Hill shutout the Valiente I attack in the second period while picking up two goals from Lucas Criado for a 4-2 advantage after two chukkers of play.

Jeff Hall and Toccalino scored single goals in the third for Valiente I, but Orchard Hill was up to the challenge.  Criado responded with two goals as orchard Hill maintained a two goal lead after the first half of play, 6-4.

The umpire’s whistles continued to sound throughout the fourth chukker with five more fouls being called.  Toccalino scored a penalty goal for Valiente I in the opening twenty seconds of play, followed by a goal from the field from Hall two minutes later, and it was all even at 6-6.  Spinacci scored on a penalty shot and added a goal from the field on a perfectly executed tail shot to end the chukker.  Orchard Hill continued to lead, 8-6.

Ten more penalties were whistled in the fifth with Toccalino converting two of them and having two of them blocked.  A third goal from Toccalino cut the Orchard Hill led to a single goal, 10-9, as Spinacci and Obregon managed single goals.

Toccalino tied it again at 10-10 in the first fifty seconds of the sixth period, but Obregon gave the lead back to Orchard Hill, 11-10 just a minute later on a penalty goal.  Toccalino converted a 40-yard penalty shot midway through the period resulting in an 11-11 tie that would force the game into sudden-death overtime.

Hall took the opening throw-in in overtime down the field to the Orchard Hill goal where a foul on the goal line gave Valiente I a penalty shot from less than a yard away.  Toccalino stroked the ball through the goal posts for the Valiente I win.

Toccalino led all scoring with ten goals (seven on penalty shots).  Hall scored twice.

Spinacci and Criado scored four goals apiece for Orchard Hill.  Obregon added three goals in the loss.

METALTEK 16, PONY EXPRESS 8

MetalTek and Pony Express fought to 3-3 tie after the first chukker, but caved in the third when MetalTek put four goals on the scoreboard on their way to a 16-8 win.

Pony Express received one goal by handicap from the 20-goal MetalTek team and added two more on goals from Juan Garcia Grossi.  MetalTek countered with single goals from Sebastian Merlos, Carlucho Arellano (40-yard penalty conversion) and Will Johnston.

Arellano added two more goals (one from the field and one from the penalty line) in the second frame.  Pony Express answered with a penalty conversion from Tomas Goti.  MetalTek held a narrow 5-4 advantage.

Goti scored on another penalty goal in the third, but MetalTek fired back with three goals from the field from Merlos and another penalty goal from Arellano.  At the end of the first half, MetalTek held a comfortable 9-5 edge.

The MetalTek attack continued to harass the Pony Express defenders in the fourth, converting on just one goal in three attempts, but the pressure was on.  Bob Daniels converted a penalty shot for Pony Express with the period ending with MetalTek maintaining its four goal lead, 10-6.

Merlos converted a 60-yard penalty goal to open the scoring in the fifth chukker, but that would be the end of their attack.  Goals from Daniels and Grossi ended the period with Pony Express trailing by only three goals, 11-8.

If there was ever any doubt about the final result of the match, MetalTek put an end to the speculation in the sixth.  A pair of goals from Stevie Orthwein and three goals from Arellano (one penalty goals and a goal from the field) were combined with lights-out defense that kept Pony Express off of the scoreboard for a 16-8 final.

Arellano led the field with eight goals (six on penalty shots).  Merlos added five goals.  Orthwein accounted for two goals and Johnston scored once in the win.

Grossi led the Pony Express offense with three goals.  Daniels and Goti scored two goals apiece and the team received one goal by handicap.

 Valiente festejó su segunda victoria en la Ylvisaker Cup

Ayer domingo por la tarde se puso en marcha la segunda ronda de la Ylvisaker Cup que se juega en el Internacional Polo Club de Wellington, Valiente I siguió con su marcha invicta de dos partidos jugados dos ganado y derrotó en tiempo extra a Orchard Hill, mientras que el equipo de MetalTek venció con total claridad al de Pony Express por 16-8.
El primer chukker del partido entre Valiente y Orchard Hill fue muy cortado por las infracciones Valiente comenzó ganando el juego por un par de tiros penales de 60 yardas anotados por Santiago Toccalino. Orchard Hill realzo un gran esfuerzo por llegar algo y pudo lograrlo gracias al accionar de Pablo Spinacci y Facundo Obregón que dejaban el primer chukker igualado 2-2.
Orchard Hill, frenó el ataque de Valiente en el segundo y de este modo le impedía sumar goles Lucas Criado aportaba dos goles para Orchard Hill que dominaba en el pleito por 4-2.

Jeff Hall y Toccalino  sumaron goles individuales para Valiente en el tercer chukker  y dejaban atrás un chukker sin obtener puntuación, pero Orchard Hill asumía  de manera firme el desafío de pelear por el control del juego y Criado  nuevamente anotaba un par de goles para dejar a su equipo al cabo de la primera mitad 6-4 arriba.
Los  árbitros seguían muy de cerca el juego y en este cuarto chukker tuvieron que detener el juego en cinco ocasiones por diversas faltas. Toccalino anotó un gol de penal para Valiente que en los primeros 20 segundos del cuarto periodo, seguido por un gol de campo de su compañero de equipo  Hall  que dejaba el cotejo igualado 6-6, Spinacci  fue el encargado de posicionar nuevamente a Orchard Hill en el cima del marcador al anotar un par de goles que dejaban las cosas 8-6 en su favor.
En el quinto chukker por momentos  Valiente superó a su rival encontró el camino al gol mediante tres goles consecutivos marcados por Tocallino dos de penal y uno desde el campo, Orchard Hill  que venía jugando a buen ritmo hasta ese momento no estaba dispuesto a renunciar al mando de la pizarra y con goles de Spinacci y Obregoon se montaba a una pequeña ventaja de un gol 10-9.
En el sexto chukker  las dos formaciones pugnaban por ganar el partido Toccalino empató  el juego en diez goles por bando  10-10, pero Obregón nuevamente ponía a Orchard Hill por delante en el marcador 11-10.Valiente no perdía las esperanzas de logra el empate y tratar de llevar el juego a una definición en tiempo extra  y fue  Toccalino  quien convirtió el gol del empate  y el partido igualado 11-11 debía definirse en tiempo extra.

Hall tomó el control de la bocha luego del throw –in de apertura del chukker suplementario y se dirigió hacia el arco rival los jugadores de Orchard Hill no pudieron detener la marcha de Hall y este convirtió el gol de la victoria y Valiente de este modo ganaba el partido por 12-11.
Toccalino fu el autor de  diez goles (siete de tiros  penales) y  Hall anotó dos veces para el triunfo de Valiente.

METALTEK 16, Pony Express 8

MetalTek y Pony Express finalizaron empatados el primer chukker  3-3, pero el quiebre en el partido se produjo en el tercer chukker cuando MetalTek pudo sacar una ventaja de cuatro goles y seguir trabajando hasta obtener una victoria final por 16-8.

Pony Express recibió un gol de desventaja respecto de su equipo rival MetalTek cuya valoración de hándicap es de veinte goles  y  rápidamente  agregó un par de goles anotados Juan García Grossi. MetalTek  contrarrestó  este primer impulso de su rival con los goles individuales marcados por Sebastián Merlos, Carlucho Arellano (penal de 40 yardas) y Johnston. Arellano agregó dos goles más para MetalTek  (un gol de campo y un gol de penal) en el segundo  periodo, Pony Express respondió con una conversión de penal anotada por  Tomás Goti. MetalTek mantuvo una ventaja de 5-4.
En el tercer chukker  MetalTek  se adueñó por completo del partido y pudo despegarse de su rival en el marcador, ya que en este periodo estiro su ventaja a cuatro goles al cabo de la primera mitad ganaba por 9-5.
El ataque MetalTek continúo llevándose todo por delante y superaba todos los  intentos defensivos de Pony Express. Bob Daniels convirtió un penal para Pony Express y el cuarto chukker concluía con MatalTelk ganando por 10-6.
Merlos convirtió un penal de 60 yardas para abrir el marcador en el quinto chukker, pero ese sería el último gol de MetalTek en el quinto chukker, Pony Express descontaba  con los goles anotados por  Daniels y Grossi  al cabo de cinco chukker jugado MetalTek ganaba por tres goles de ventaja 11-8.

El sexto chukker fue sin duda un monologo de MetalTek que en ningún momento disminuyó su marcha hacia el triunfo y siguió siendo pura efectividad en ataque, y fue por ello que ganó el partido por una cómoda pizarra de 16-8.

Matias Obregon scored the first goal of the game on a penalty shot in the first chukker followed by a goal from the field from Marianito Obregon.  Villa Del Lago smothered the La Casa Hermosa attack, holding them scoreless in the opening seven minutes of lay as they took the early 2-0 lead.

A goal from the field from Chris Nevins was followed by a 60-yard penalty conversion from Jeff Blake as La Casa Hermosa tied it up at 2-2 in the second, and the battle was on.

Jeff Blake added another goal from the field in the third, followed by a 40-yard penalty shot for a goal from his brother Brad Blake as the moved ahead 4-2.  The Villa Del Lago attack continued to press the attack, drawing three penalties from the defending La Casa Hermosa players.  Matias Obregon did the honors, converting two 60-yard penalty shots and a 30-yarder.  Villa Del Lago Left the field with a tenuous 5-4 advantage.

The third period opened with consecutive goals from Brad and Jeff Blake for a 6-5 La Casa Hermosa edge, but Marianito Obregon tied it up at 6-6 with his first goal of the game to end the chukker.

Jeff Blake converted a 60-yard Safety in the fifth for a 7-6 lead, but Villa Del Lago was awarded a goal on a rarely called Penalty 1 to deadlock it at 7-7.  Nevins closed out the chukker with a goal from the field and an 8-7 advantage to end the chukker.

Defenses took center stage in the final chukker of regulation with Villa Del Lago struggling to preserve their one goal lead while La Casa Hermosa fought to score the tying goal and force the contest into overtime.

It was Marianito Obregon who finally drove the ball through the La Casa Hermosa goal for the 8-8- tie and a sudden-death overtime period.

An ill-timed foul put Nevins at the penalty line in the overtime period, and in seconds it was over as the penalty goal delivered the victory to La Casa Hermosa in a 9-8 barnburner.

La Casa Hermosa ganó su partido en  tiempo extra.

El equipo de Villa del Lago comenzó ganando el partido con una temprana ventaja de dos goles, pero el equipo La Casa Hermosa reaccionó en la segunda mitad del partido y a base de goles y buen juego forzó  un chukker suplementario y se llevó el triunfo por 9-8. En un cotejo correspondiente a al torneo Freebooters Classicc en la mañana de hoy domingo.

En el primer chukker Villa del Lago sacó rápido ventaja en el tanteador gracias a los goles individuales anotados por Matías Obregón y Mariano Obregón, La Casa Hermosa quedó marginado del marcador al no poder convertir goles en el chukker inicial.

En el segundo chukker los dos equipos jugaron un polo abierto de palos largaos y esto le imprimía mucha velocidad al juego La Casa Hermosa dio vuelta la pizarra al convertir cuatro goles consecutivos y pasar al frente por 4-2, pero Matías Obregón convirtió tres penales seguido para Villa del Lago que retornaba al liderazgo del partido ganando por 5-4. En el tercer chukker se anotaron menos goles que en el periodo antecesor los dos equipos quedaron a mano en el primer tiempo que culminaba empatado 6-6.
Jeff Blake convirtió un penal  60 yardas en el quinto chukker  para darle una ventaja de 7-6 a su equipo La Casa Hermosa, pero Villa Del Lago facturaba en su favor la infracciones cometidas por su rival y a eso se le sumaba un gol de campo anotado por Nevins. Villa del Lago entraba a jugar el sexto chukker ganando por 8-7.
En el sexto chukker predominó el juego defensivo bien ejecutado por los dos equipos Villa del Lago intentaba regular las acciones para que el tiempo pasara lo más rápido posible y mantenerse arriba en el tanteador. La Casa Hermosa luchó para anotar el gol del empate y  los consiguió 8-8 fue por ello que este buen partido necesitaba de un tiempo extra para definir a su ganador.

El chukker suplementario que definía todo apenas duro algunos segundos la defensa de Villa del Lago cometió un infracción que fue sancionada con un penal de 60 yardas para la Casa Hermosa y Nevins lo cambio por gol y le dio el triunfo a su equipo por un apretado 9-8.

During the four chukers of the match, both teams fight for the lead and the difference between each other was never more than two goals.

The first chukker ended 2 all. In the second period the score kept in the same way as the first one, with a 3 goals a piece.

The third chukker had similar results, the score was tied at five, it was the first time that Ghantoot took the lead (5-3). But at the end of the chukker, a great reaction by Abu Dhabi foursome, kept the result even.

The final period showed better actions by Abu Dhabi side with Sebastián Borghi scoring two goals that gave them the victory.

Zedan Polo vs Rhinos

Similar actions were seen in the second match between Zedan Polo and Rhinos. In the opening game for Zedan Polo they showed a good team tactics under the guidance of international polo star, Nachi Heguy.

Rhinos had a very good start, taking the lead in the first two chukker (3-1 and 3-2). Agustín Lorea was responsible for the three goals of Rhinos, two by 60 yards penalty.

The reaction of patron Amr Zedan´s team came in the third chukker with two goals of Rodolfo Ducos, one of the best players of the game.

In the fourth chukker when the matched looked like it was over, Mario Gomez scored for Rhinos, with one minute left in the game, and took the match to extra chukker.

In the fifth chukker, after several opportunities for Rhinos team,  Nachi Heguy scored a magnificent goal, with a neckshot hit, and gave the victory to Zedan Polo by 6-5 in its opening game in the tournament.

The Silver Cup 2012 will continue tommorrow with an exciting match between Habtoor Polo and Mahra at 4 pm.

Abu Dhabi y Zedan  sus respectivos partidos en la Silver Cup.

Abu Dhabi y Zedan resultaron ganadores de los partidos correspondientes a la tercera fecha de la Silver Cup 2012.
Abu Dhabi,  resultó vencedor del en el primer partido de la jornada en cual  venció por un ajustado marcador de  7-6 a  Ghantoot que dio pelea hasta el final del cotejo. Durante la totalidad del partido los dos equipos lucharon por convertirse en el dominador del juego y siempre estuvieron parejos en el marcador.

A lo largo de todo el partido el resultado fue cambiando de mano constantemente los dos cuartetos luchaban por adueñarse del marcador, promediando el tercer chukker  Ghantoot tomaba la delantera en la pizarra y estaba ganando por 5-3, pero Abu Dhabi pudo reaccionar y dejaba el juego empatado 5-5.
El período final  quien se mostró  dentro del campo de juego fue de Abu Dhabi y gracias al aporte goleador de Sebastián Borghi  se adjudicó el triunfo por 7-6.

Zedan versus  Rhinos.
En el segundo partido del día el trámite del cotejo fue similar al del primejuego tanto  Zedan Polo como Rhinos brindaron un buen espectáculo al público presente. En el equipo de Zedan se notó la calidad y el talento de su jugador estrella  Nachi Heguy.
Rhino tuvo un muy buen comienzo de partido, tomando el control del tanteador en los dos primero chukker, en el primer periodo ganaba por 3-1 y concluido el segundo chukker continuaba ganando por 3-2. Agustín Lorea fue el encargado de marcar los 3 goles de Rhino.
La reacción del equipo del  patrón  Amr Zedan llegó en el tercer chukker,  por intermedio de los goles anotados por Rodolfo Ducos, quien a la larga sería el mejor jugador de la cancha.
En el cuarto chukker  cuando al partido le quedaban pocos minutos en el reloj y todo hacía indicar que Zedan ganaría el juego apareció  Mario Gómez  anotando un gol para Rhino y dejaba el juego igualado 5-5 y la definición del partido se trasladaba  a un chukker suplementario.  La Copa de Plata 2012 continuará  mañana con un emocionante partido entre Habtoor Polo y Mahra a las 4 pm.

Zacara: Marcos Llambías , Lyndon Lea , Jeff Blake  y Gonzalo Deltour .

Lucchese: 1/0, 3/0, 5/3, 8/4, 10/4, 13/5.

By Alex Webbe; Lucchese and Zacara closed out the day with a choppy competition that had Pelon Stirling scoring the only goal of the opening chukker of play.

Stirling added two more unanswered goals in the second period, scoring once from the field and converting a penalty shot for a goal for a 3-0 lead, and no sign of life from the Zacara offense.

Stirling converted a 60-yard penalty shot in the third and added a goal from the field for a 5-0 advantage before Zacara managed to get on the scoreboard.  Penalty conversions from Marcos Llambias and Gonzalo Del Tour got Zacara on the scoreboard, but it was Lucchese that left the field with a three goal, 5-3 lead.

Lucchese took control of the game in the second half, putting three consecutive goals on the board before Zacara responded.  Stirling added two more goals from the field while teammate Cote Zegers added his first goal of the afternoon.  Del Tour converted a 60-yard penalty shot to keep his team from being shut out.  Lucchese had extended its lead to five goals, 8-5 after the fourth chukker.

Stirling added a penalty goal in the fifth and Santi Torres registered his first goal of the game while a punchless Zacara offense went scoreless for the third time.  Lucchese led 10-7 and showed no sign of letting up.

Zacara team captain Lyndon Lea scored his team’s first goal from the field in the sixth chukker and Llambias added another, but there was not enough offense to get back into the game.  Two more goals from Torres and a goal from Zegers ended the game as Lucchese claimed the 13-5 win.

Stirling led the field with eight goals.  Torres scored three times and Zegers accounted for two goals in the victory.

Del tour and Llambias scored two goals apiece for Zacara.  Lea added a goal in a losing effort.

LUCCHESE 13, ZACARA  5

Lucchese y Zacara  cerraron el día de competencia y el equipo de Lucchese  comenzó ganando el juego con un gol de David Stirling y este gol fue el único tanto anotado en el primer chukker.
Stirling seguía con su racha positiva en ataque y marcaba un par de goles más para Lucchese y era dueño del tanteador por 3-0. Concluido los dos primeros chukkers del partido Zacara tenía dificultades en su funcionamiento colectivo y no había anotado goles hasta ese momento.
En el tercer chukker  Stirling el mejor jugador de la cancha hasta ese momento  se había vuelto imparable para la defensa de Zacara, Pelón anoto un par de goles para Lucchese que estaba arriba en el marcador por 5-0. Promediando el tercer chukker empezaron a llegar los goles de Zacara que no solo servían para descontar sino también para retomar impulso en el juego los goles fueron convertidos por  Marcos Llambías y Gonzalo del Tour, Luccehese terminaba ganando el primer tiempo por 5-3.
En el segundo tiempo Lucchese asumió por completo el  control del juego  sumando tres goles consecutivos antes que Zacara pudiera descontar,  Stirling añadido dos nuevos goles de campo, mientras que su compañero de equipo Cote Zegers sumó su primer gol de la tarde. Del Tour convirtió un  tiro penal de 60 yardas para tratar de  mantener vivas las esperanza de su escuadra Luchhese dejaba el campo tras cuatro chukker disputados ganando por 8-4.

En los dos últimos chukker del partido Lucchese mantenía la posesión de la bocha y medida que pasaban los minutos anotabas goles y de este modo consolidaba una cómoda victoria final de 13-5.
Stirling anotó ocho goles,  Torres marcó en tres ocasiones  y Zegers  sumó dos goles en la victoria.
Del Tour y Llambías anotaron dos goles cada uno para Zacara Lea agregó un gol.

Valiente II/Tonkawa: Bob Jornayvaz, Gerardo Collardin 7, Ignacio Novillo Astrada 9 y Julio Gracida 4.

Villa del Lago: 3/1, 4/2, 6/2, 6/5, 6/7, 9/7

By Alex Webbe; Jared Zenni’s return to the Villa Del Lago team was a successful one as the team jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead before scoring a 9-7 win over a talented Valiente II team in the second Ylvisaker Cup match of the day.

After a scoreless opening three minutes of play, Argentine 9-goaler Nacho Astrada scored on a penalty shot to give Valiente II an early 1-0 lead, but Villa del Lago charged back into action, scoring three straight goals to end the chukker.  Augustin Obregon scored on a difficult nearside neck shot followed by a pair of goals from Magoo Laprida (one on a penalty shot and one from the field).  The period ended with Villa del Lago leading by two goals, 3-1.

Villa del Lago’s Pelon Escapite and Valiente II’s Julio Gracida exchanged penalty goals for the only scoring of the second chukker as both defenses stiffened.  Villa del Lago continued to lead by two goals, 4-2.

Escapite scored from the field in the third followed by a penalty goal from Laprida.  Valiente II was held scoreless and Villa del Lago found themselves holding a 6-2 halftime advantage.

Valiente II rallied in the fourth, scoring three unanswered goals to cut the lead to a single goal, 6-5.  Astrada scored on two well-executed backhanders while team captain Bob Jornayvaz carried the ball through the goal for the final goal of the chukker.

The Valiente II domination continued into the fifth period as Astrada tied it with an opening goal and then scored the go-ahead on a 100 yard run.  With one chukker left to play in regulation time, Valiente II held a narrow 7-6 edge over Villa del Lago.

Zenni scored on a cut shot to tie it up in the sixth, 7-7, and Escapite added his third goal of the game for an 8-7 lead.  Escapite scored an insurance goal on a 60-yard penalty conversion and Villa del Lago celebrated the 9-7 victory.

Escapite led the Villa del Lago attack with four goals.  Laprida added three goals and Obregon and Zenni added single goals in the win.

Astrada registered five goals for Valiente II.  Teammates Jornayvaz and Gracida scored single goals.

Villa del Lago 9- 7 VALIENTE II

El equipo de  Villa Del Lago fue construyendo una victoria de menor  a mayor y al cabo del primer tiempo ganaba por 6-2. Y en la segunda mitad pudo mantenerse firme en el marcador y vencer por 9-7 al buen equipo de Valiente II en el segundo partido de esta triple jornada perteneciente  a la Ylvisaker Cup.
En los primeros minutos del chukker inicial ninguno de los dos equipos podía asumir el control del marcador, hasta que Nacho Astrada anotó un penal para Valiente que de este modo pasaba a ganar por 1-0. Villa del Lago sacó a relucir todo su poder de gol en el primer chukker y anotó tres goles consecutivos para pasar a ganar por 3-1, los autores de los goles de Villa del Lago fueron Magoo Laprida (2 goles) y Agustín Obregón.
Pelón Escapite de Villa del Lago  y  Julio Gracida  de Valiente II  intercambiaron un gol cada uno para sus respectivos equipos  y esas fueron todas las emociones del segundo periodo los dos equipos endurecieron su juego en defensa  y no se sacaron más ventaja en ese segundo chukker. Villa del Lago siguió al frente por dos goles, 4-2.
En el tercer chukker Villa del Lago superaba a su rival en el concepto de juego colectivo y gracias a los goles marcados por Ecapite y Laprida cerraba el primer tiempo ganando por 6-2. En este tercer periodo Valiente II no supo saltar el cerco defensivo que su rival le impuso y se quedó marginado del marcador sin anotar goles.
Valiente II se recuperó en el reinicio del juego en la segunda mitad y al convertir tres goles a favor sin recibir goles encontrar descontaba la distancia en el marcador y estaba un solo gol abajo 5-6. Astrada  facturó dos buenos goles y el capitán del equipo Bob Jornayvaz  traslado la bocha bajo su control y atravesó la meta rival para festejar su gol.
En el quinto chukker Valiente II seguía ejerciendo  el dominio de las acciones Astrada empató  con un gol y luego el mismo jugador realizo una carrera a puro galope por más de 100 yardas y le dio la ventaja parcial a Valiente II por 7-6 con solo un chukker por jugarse.
Villa del Lago recuperó el rumbo en el sexto y último chukker  y fue por ello que pudo torcer la historia en su favor y llevarse el partido por un pizarra de 9-7.

Escapite guio el ataque de  Villa del Lago con cuatro goles, Laprida agregó tres goles,  en tanto que Obregón y Zenni anotaron un gol cada uno.

By Alex Webbe/ The first round of play in the 2012 Ylvisaker Cup was completed Saturday afternoon at the International Polo club in Wellington with Coca-Cola, Villa del Lago and Lucchese ringing up wins in the 20-goal competition.

The day opened with Heathcote taking on Coca-Cola, the winner of the season’s two opening tournaments, the Herbie Pennell Cup and the Joe Barry Memorial Cup, and making an early impression by running out to an 8-4 halftime lead before falling 12-11 in sudden-death overtime.

Tommy Biddle gave Heathcote the early led on a 60-yard penalty conversion.  A goal from teammate Nick Manifold had Coca-Cola trailing 3-0 before they got their attack organized.  Mason Wroe scored Coke’s first goal of the game with Sugar Erskine tallying the tying goal to end the first chukker, 2-2.

The Heathcote defense smothered Coca-Cola in the second while Biddle put on an offensive show.  After converting another 60-yard penalty shot, the 6-goaler buried a nearside backhand shot from over 85 yards out.  He followed up with a third goal in the chukker for a 5-3 lead.  Coca-Cola was shut out.

Lucas Monteverde put Heathcote up 6-2 with the opening goal of the third period.  Biddle scorched another ball through the goal posts on a 200 yard run before Coke woke up.  Julio Arellano scored Coca-Cola’s first goal since the first chukker on a penalty shot and then followed it up with a goal from the field to cut the Heathcote lead to three goals, 7-4.  Monteverde closed out the chukker with his second goal of the game with Heathcote leading by four goals, 8-4.

Arellano opened the second half with a goal from the field.  Biddle converted a penalty shot from 40-yards out, 9-5.  Arellano converted a penalty shot as the chukker ended with Coca-Cola behind, 9-6.

The Coca-Cola offense was transformed in the fifth period with Arellano converting a penalty goal and Erskine adding two more goals to lock it up at 9-9 with one chukker left to play.  For the first time all day Heathcote was kept off the scoreboard.

Arellano converted a 60-yard penalty shot to open the scoring in the sixth to give Coca-Cola its first lead of the game, 10-9, but Heathcote’s Monteverde responded with a tying penalty goal of his own.   Arellano fired back with another go-ahead goal as he rode through two Heathcote players on an impressive scoring effort, 11-10.  With time running out, Monteverde converted a Safety (60-yard penalty shot) to force the game into sudden-death overtime.

After a brief recess to change mounts, both teams returned to the field for the throw-in which Erskine took immediate possession of, and with just 18 seconds off of the clock, scored the winning goal.

Arellano scored seven times for Coca-Cola (1-0).  Erskine added four goals and Wroe accounted for a score in the win.

Biddle led the Heathcote (0-1) attack with six goals.  Monteverde added four goals and Manifold registered a goal.

Coca – Cola ganó su primer partido en la Yvisaker Cup.

La primera ronda de juego en la Ylvisaker Cup edición 2012 se completó  en la tarde de ayer la triple jornada programada  para el día 4 de febrero se jugó en su totalidad en el Internacional Polo Club. Coca-Cola, Villa del Lago y  Lucchese  se anotaron con victorias en  esta competencia reservada para equipos de hasta 20 goles de Handicap.
La jornada  abrió con el partido animado por Coca – Cola reciente ganador de los torneos Herbie Pennel Cup y La Joe Barry Cup, que midió fuerzas contra  Heathcote, el equipo de Coca – Cola se llevó el triunfo en tiempo extra con un gol de muerte súbita  12-11..
Tommy Biddle rompió el cero en el match anotando el primer gol para Heathcote mediante un penal de 60 yardas, luego su compañero de equipo  Nick Manifold anotó un gol más y Heathecote se ponía 2-0 al frente en el marcador Promediando la mitad del primer chukker  Coca-Cola pudo organizar su juego colectivo en ataque y llegaba al empate por los goles adicionados por  Mason Wroe y  Sugar Erskine  el chukker inicial termino igualado 2-2.
La defensa Heathcote impidió que progresara cualquier intento ofensivo de Coca – Cola en el segundo chukker, mientras que Biddle  jugaba un polo de buen nivel en ofensiva y anotaba un par de excelentes goles y le otorgaba a su equipo una ventaja de 5-2. Coca – Cola no anotó goles en ese segundo periodo.
Lucas Monteverde convirtió su primer gol de la tarde en el inicio del tercer chukker  y Heathcote estiraba su ventaja  a cuatro goles 6-2, Biddle ejecutó un excelente tiro desde más de 200 yardas introdujo la bocha entre los mimbre de su rival, pero Coca – Cola reaccionó y respondió con goles luego de estar un chukker sin anotar tantos Julio Arellano decía presente entre los goleadores sumando un par de goles 7-4.Cuando el primer tiempo se consumía Monteverde anotó el último gol de la primera mitad y Heathcote ganaba por 8-4.
En el comienzo de la segunda mitad Arellano era quien abastecía de goles a la causa de Coca – Cola marcando un nuevo gol de campo, pero Biddle no dejaba que su rival se acercara demasiado en el tanteador y convertía en gol un penal de 40 yardas. Arellano quien una vez finalizado el pleito seria el goleador de Coca – Cola le bajaba la persiana al cuarto chukker con un gol más, Heathcote ganaba por 9-6.
Coca-Cola fue el protagonista principal del quinto chukker superando en todas las líneas a Heathcote  y lograba igualar el juego gracias una ráfaga de tres goles consecutivos, Arellano convirtió un gol de penal y Erskine  al anotar dos goles le dio el empate a su equipo en nueve goles 9-9. Heathcote por primera vez en el cotejo se vio imposibilitado de anotar goles.
En el sexto chukker del partido Coca- Cola pasaba por primera vez en la tarde al frente en el marcador por 10-9. El chukker se fu consumiendo y los equipos intercambiaron golpe por golpe y el partido culminó empatado 11-11 y para definir el partido fue necesario un chukker extra.
Después de un breve descanso que le sirvió a los ocho protagonistas para elegir sus mejores caballos los dos equipo volvieron al campo de juego, Erskine sea adueño de la bocha y anotó el con el que Coca – Cola se llevó su primer victoria 12-11  en la Ylvisaker Cup.

Arellano anotó siete veces para Coca-Cola (1-0),  Erskine añadió cuatro goles y Wroe  sumo un gol para la victoria.
Biddle fue el goleador de  Heathcote con seis goles (0-1),  Monteverde añadió cuatro goles y Manifold convirtió un solo gol.

Rashid Al Habtoor team had the lead early on but never had more than two goals difference in the score.

Second and third chukker had both teams fighting for the control of the game. Mahra had his time in the game with a 3-1 advantage in the second chukker and 4-2 in the third.

The best moments of the match came in the last chukker. Two goals from Juanjo Brane even up the score at 4 goals and Nacho Gonzalez, with a 60 yards penalty, put Mahra on top again.

Bin Drai never gave up and replied in the next play. From a defensive play of Mahra, the ball rebounded into a horse and Brane took advantage of the opportunity to extend the game to extra time.

A great action in overtime ended in goal by Guy Gibrat, gave Mahra the victory by 6 to 5.

With this victory Mahra Polo Team joins Habtoor Polo and Abu Dhabi at the top of the leaderboard with one win each.

Silver Cup will continue tomorrow with two magnificent matches.  Abu Dhabi and Zedan Polo will open the day at 2.30 pm. It will be the great opportunity to see Nachi Heguy in action, the highest rated player in the tournament. Heguy, winner of the Argentinian Open in several occasions, the best tournament of the world. He will play for patron Amr Zedan team.

The second match will be played by the Ghantoot and Rhinos at 4.00 pm.

MAHRA POLO necesitó de un chukker suplementario a Bin Drai

Mahra venció a su rival Brin Drai en un muy disputado partido el cual se extendió hasta un chukker suplementario con gol de muerte súbita, Mahra se adjudicó el tercer partido de la Copa de Plata 2012 por 6-5.

El equipo liderado por Rashid Al Habtoor  siempre tuvo la iniciativa en el juego, pero nunca pudo consolidar su dominio en el marcador nunca saco una ventaja mayor a dos goles.
En el segundo y tercer chukker  los dos equipos luchaban por tomar la posesión de la bocha y tomara el control del juego, Mahra finalizó ganando el segundo chukker por 2-1 y en el tercer chukker paso a ganar por 4-2.
Los momentos más emocionantes del partido estuvieron reservados para el cuarto chukker, dos goles facturado por  Juanjo Brane,  le dio el empate a Brin Drai en 4-4. Pero  Nacho González, anotando un penal de 60 yardas puso a Mahra en la parte superior  de la pizarra.
La formación de Bin Drai nunca se dio por vencido y en la jugada siguiente  logró  igualar el cotejo nuevamente  y trasladar la definición a un tiempo extra con gol de muerte súbita.
Una gran acción en el tiempo suplementario terminó en gol de Gibrat Guy, y le dio a Mahra la victoria por 6 a 5.
Con esta victoria Mahra Polo Team se une a Habtoor Polo y Abu Dhabi en la primera posición  de la tabla de posiciones con una victoria cada uno.
La Copa de Plata continuará mañana domingo  con dos partidos magníficos. Abu Dhabi y Zedan Polo abrirán  el día a las 2.30 pm, será la gran oportunidad de ver Nachi Heguy en la acción, el jugador mejor clasificado en el torneo. Heguy,  ha ganado el Abierto de Argentina en varias ocasiones,  torneos que es considerado el mejor del mundo. Jugará en el equipo del  patrón, Amr Zedan.
El segundo partido va ser animado por Ghantoot  vs. Rhinos a las 4.00 pm.

Habtoor Polo took a 5-4 victory over Ghantoot in the second match of the Silver Cup 2012 during a tough meeting. Habtoor  Polo opened the first chukker with two goals that were recovered by Ghantoot in the next chukker  leading the match. We arrive to  the fourth chukker tied up 3-3 with a great goal of Francisco Elizalde. We rode into the overtime and after a few plays there was a penalty of Habtoor which Elizalde made a goal to clean the game.

COMENZÓ A DISPUTARSE LA SILVER CUP 2012 EN DUBAI 

El viernes 3 de febrero, se inició exitosamente el torneo por la Silver Cup que se disputa en Emiratos Árabe Unidos, en el Dubai Polo & Equestrian Club. En esta primera jornada Abu Dhabi (P. Neves, A. Capella y S. Borghi) le ganó 11 a 5 a Rhinos (M. Fernández Llorente, A. Lorea y M. Gómez), mientras que Habtoor Polo (F. Elizalde, G. Cuitiño e I. Acuña) hixo lo propi ante Ghantoot (J. Cernadas, O. Colombres y R. Cordero) tras derrotarlo por 5 a 4.

El torneo seguirá su curso el sábado 4/2 con el partido que jugarán Bin Drai, con los argentinos Juan José Brané, Nicolás Petracchi y Tomás Iriarte vs. Mahra, con su compatriota Agustín Canale.

By Alex Webbe; Both Equuleus and ERG made their 2012 debuts Friday afternoon in an opening round of the Ylvisaker Cup, but showed mid-season form as they battled to a 12-11 Equuleus win in the 20-goal competition.

Agustin Merlos opened the scoring with a penalty goal for ERG, but Equuleus promptly responded with a penalty goal from Mariano Gonzalez.  Goals from ERG team captain Scott Wood and teammate Ulysses Escapite ended with ERG leading, 3-1.

Another penalty goal from Merlos in the second had ERG up, 4-1.  Gonzalez scored on a 60-yard penalty shot and Paco de Narvaez scored on a beautifully executed backhander-from an angle, making it a one goal game, 4-3.  Merlos added a final goal, and ERG preserved its lead, 5-3.

Escapite’s second goal on the afternoon had ERG leading by three goals in the fourth chukker, 6-3, when Equuleus stormed back into the game.  De Narvaez scored once from the field and once on a penalty shot, and the period ended with ERG defending a narrow 6-5 advantage at the end of the first half against a surging Equuleus team.

Merlos converted a 60-yard penalty shot in the fifth chukker, but that would be the last ERG goal scored for the duration of the period.  Gonzalez added two penalty goals to the Equuleus total and de Narvaez scored a goal from the field.  With one chukker left to play, ERG trailed 11-9.

Merlos cut the Equuleus lead to a single goal with his fourth penalty goal of the match, and Luis Escobar tied it up, 11-11, with his first goal of the game.

Gonzalez scored his sixth penalty goal of the day for a 12-11 lead that held up in the final 34 seconds of play, and Equuleus celebrated its 12-11 win.

Gonzalez led all scoring with seven goals.  De Narvaez scored five times in a winning effort.

Merlos led the ERG team with six goals.  Escapite added two goals and Wood and Escobar each scored a goal.

El partido jugado hoy por Equuleus y ERG significaba el debut de los dos equipos en esta temporada 2012  en la primera ronda de la Ylvisaker, Equuleus se llevó el partido por un ajustado marcador 12-11.

Agustín Merlos, abrió el juego anotando un tiro penal para ERG, pero Equuleus no tardó demasiado en responder por intermedio de  Mariano González, ERG continuo marcando goles en el primer periodo  gracias a su capitán Scott Wood y su compañero Ulises Escapite  el chukker inicial terminó 3-1.
Mediante un gol de penal anotado por  Merlos ERG continuaba  arriba en el marcador por 4-1. González y Paco de Narváez eran quienes aportaban goles a la causa de Equuleus que se acercaba peligrosamente en el marcador y quedaba abajo solo por un gol 4-3,Merlos añadió un gol para ERG que alejaba el peligro y se mantenía arriba en la pizarra por 5-3.
En el tercer chukker  ERG estiraba su ventaja a tres goles  con el gol anotado por Escapite jugado la mitad del tercer periodo ERG estaba al mando por 6-3, y en ese momento del partido Equuleus empezó a crecer en su volumen de juego y su ataque De Narvez marcaría un par de goles consecutivo para dejar a su equipo en las puertas del empate solo perdían por un gol 6-5. De este modo todo quedaba por resolverse en la segunda mitad.
En la segunda mitad del partido Equuleus confirmó todo lo bueno que había insinuado en el primer tiempo y de poco fue inclinando la balanza en su favor, peldaño a peldaño fue ascendiendo hasta quedarse con el partido por la mínima diferencia de un gol 12-11.

Entre González  y  De Narváez anotaron todos los goles de su equipo, Gonzáles anoto en siete ocasiones y su compañero de equipo en cinco.
Merlos fue el goleador de  ERG con seis goles, Escapite agregó dos goles , mientras que Wood y Escobar anotaron  un gol cada uno.

By Alex Webbe; Two one-goal victories highlighted the day at the International Polo Club in Wellington with Audi knocking off Piaget 10-9 in overtime while Equuleus held on to defeat ERG 12-11 in the opening round of play in the 2012 Ylvisaker Cup.

Although a milestone in the career of any young polo player, the debut of 13-year-old Grant Ganzi on the Piaget team couldn’t slow down the Audi attack as Marc Ganzi (Grant’s father) led his team to a 10-9 win in sudden-death overtime over wife Melissa’s Piaget foursome.

“Marc and I play against one another all of the time,” said Melissa.  “We thought this would be a good opportunity for Grant to get some experience at the high-goal level,” she added.

Audi opened play with a pair of goals from Nic Roldan (one from the field and one on a penalty conversion), with Jason Crowder scoring a chukker ending goal to get Piaget on the scoreboard.

Piaget turned it on in the second period, adding two more goals from Crowder while holding Audi to a single goal from Rodrigo Andrade.  After two chukkers of play it was all even at 3-3.

Crowder’s fourth goal of the game had Piaget ahead 4-3 when Audi responded.  A goal from Roldan and three consecutive goals from Andrade, the last being batted out of mid-air for the score, stopped Piaget in their tracks as Audi rode off of the field on top of a 7-4 score.

Argentine 9-goaler Miguel Astrada scored his first goal of the day in the fourth, but Roldan quickly answered back, taking control of the ensuing throw-in and carrying it down the field for a score.  Audi maintained a three goal lead after four chukkers, 8-5.

Astrada flexed his polo muscles in the fifth, first by converting a 60-yard penalty shot for a goal and then by picking up the ball of his own goal line and dashing nearly 300 yards for a goal.  Audi was held scoreless for the first time all day but continued to lead, 8-7.

After two near goals earlier in the game, Grant Ganzi finally got on the scoreboard with a tying shot in the sixth, 8-8.  Marc Ganzi responded with an Audi goal, but with seconds on the clock, Astrada nailed a shot through the Audi goal posts for a 9-9 tie and sudden-death overtime.

Both Audi (1-0) and Piaget (0-1) had early opportunities to control the ball, but it was Andrade who scored the game winner for the 10-9 win.

Astrada and Crowder scored four goals apiece for Piaget.  Grant Ganzi added a goal in a losing effort.

Andrade registered five goals for Audi.  Roldan contributed four for the win and Marc Ganzi accounted for a goal.

Audi ganó su primer partido con un gol en el tiempo suplementario.

El dato curioso de los dos partidos disputados hoy en el Internacional Polo Club fue que los dos equipos vencedores ganaron sus partidos por un solo gol de ventaja, Piaget necesitó de un tiempo extra para vencer  10-9 a Audi y dio Equuleus dio cuenta de ERG por 12-11. Ambos partidos corresponden a la ronda de clasificación de la Ylvisaker Cup.

En el equipo de Piaget se produjo el debut del joven jugador de 13 años de edad Grant Ganzi, que a pesar de su esfuerzo y el de su compañeros cayeron derrotados 10-9 frente al a Audi formación de Marc Ganzi (padre del juvenil Grant).
Audi comenzó ganando el partido  con un par de goles anotados por Nic Roldan, mientras  que Jason Crowder descontaba en el final del primer chukker anotando un gol para Piaget, 2-1.
Piaget  encontró su nivel de juego en el segundo chukker y mediante los goles anotados por Crowder pasaba a ganar momentáneamente por 3-2, pero Audi celebró el gol anotado por Rodrigo  Andrade que le permitía dejar el partido empatado  3-3 tras dos periodos jugados.
En el tercer chukker  el juego se volvió más dinámico y entretenido Crowder  anotaba su cuarto gol de la tarde en su libreta personal  y Piaget ganaba por 4-3. Audi reaccionó justo a tiempo y con un gol anotado por Roldan y tres goles consecutivos de Andrade se iban al descanso de medio tiempo ganando por tres goles de ventaja 7-4.
Miguel Astrada hizo su aparición en el marcador en el cuarto chukker al anotar su primer gol del cotejo, pero Roldán se adueñó del control de la bocha luego de un saque lateral y recorrió el campo de juego con la bocha en su poder y convertir una conquista más para Audi que mantenía una ventaja de tres goles al cabo del cuarto chukker 8-5.
Astrada se convirtió en el gran líder de la remontada de Piaget en el quinto chukker  convirtiendo primero un gol de penal y por ultimo recuperar la bocha la línea de su propio arco y con la bocha en su poder cruzar el campo de juego de punta a punta y marcar el séptimo gol de su equipo.  En este quinto chukker Audi por primera vez en el juego no sumó goles, aún seguía ganando pero solamente por un gol de ventaja 8-7.
En el sexto chukker Grant Ganzi finalmente anotaba su primer gol en el partido y le daba a Piaget el empate parcial en ocho goles 8-8. Marc Ganzi capitán de  Audi se encargaba de llevar agua para su molino y anotaba el gol con el que rompía la igualdad y pasaba a ganar por 9-8,  casi al filo de la campana final Astrada  realizo un excelente tiro de media distancia y anotó el gol que decretaba el empate del partido 9-9 y la necesidad de un chukker suplementario para definir esta match.
En el chukker suplementario los do equipos desperdiciaron un par de opciones de gol, pero en Audi estuvo más preciso Andrade y marcó el gol de la victoria en el chukker extra de muerte súbita Audi ganó por 10-9.
